What is social media?

Social media websites are online communities where you can interact with friends, organisations or just other people interested in similar ideas or topics.  On these sites you can share images, news stories, videos, interesting facts and more,  and at the same time you can receive all these things in return.  The popularity of social media sites is rising all the time and more and more people are using them to access and share useful information with the UK and the World.


Why is City Lit involved in using social media?

City Lit is starting to use websites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, not only to share our news, events and new courses, but to more importantly listen to our students.  We've set up discussions on Facebook about what courses you would like to see us run, we regularly keep an eye on Twitter to see what people are saying about us and our courses, and we love seeing your comments on our Youtube movies.  This is a way of us communicating with you in a more direct way, enabling us to listen to you and use your feedback to make City Lit an ever better place to learn.

How can I get involved?

By becoming a fan on Facebook, or following us on Twitter, you will be able to share your views with us and with other students.  We'd also love you to encourage and offer advice to potential students who are unsure which course to take. 

Facebook
Getting involved is so simple:
-  sign in or log in
-  our page should automatically show if you've used the link above; if not, put 'City Lit - the centre for adult learning' in the search box. 
-  click on the 'Become a fan' button.

When you are a fan you can join in discussions, take part in a poll, post comments on our wall and share images with us.

Twitter

This is another really easy task:
-   sign in or log in to Twitter
-   our tweets should automatically show if you've used the link above; if not, go to 'find people' at the top of the page and type in 'City Lit'
-   click on the icon to 'follow City Lit'.

When you start following us you will receive regular updates on news, events and interesting articles.  You can also then start following other organisations you're interested in too. 

What is FourSquare?

Foursquare is a fairly new social media site which allows you to explore local places such as restaurants, bars, museums, and in our case, colleges.  Foursquared is designed to be accessed through your phone (iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm or Android).  When you 'check in' to a place, the application then gives you recommendations for that place and top tips for how to best experience it.  You can also add recommendations and tips for places. You can earn points and unlock badges for discovering new places, doing new things and meeting new people.  For example, if you check in to City Lit you will receive tips on the college and our courses.  If you check in enough times, you become Mayor of City Lit - yes, really!
