You said, we did
We receive lots of feedback from students throughout the year, via Tell us what you think forms, learnerfeedback@citylit.ac.uk, course evaluations, and ad hoc focus groups. You may be interested to hear about actions we’ve taken as a result of your feedback. Here’s a summary of some of the changes we’ve made recently.
Course offer
Visual Arts
- bookbinding equipment upgraded
- renewed hand tools in sculpture and jewellery
- new state of the art studio to accommodate photography courses in Kean Street
- included ‘course levels' descriptions in the course guide and on the website to provide a clearer idea of what we mean by ‘beginners’, ‘intermediate’ and ‘advanced’ levels to help students find the most appropriate course for them.
Music
- purchase of new musical instruments
- re-modelled music technology suite
- new course for singing teachers
- introduced new music appreciation course ‘Inside the BBC Symphony Orchestra’
- Music Technology - advanced production techniques course added
- extra Introduction to Max/MSP course.
Drama, dance and speech
- new progression route for Flamenco.
Computing
- Additional advanced Excel, Sage level 2 and Sage Payroll courses.
Languages
- Scheduled additional courses for students to progress onto the next level. Some courses were made up of 2 modules and an extra module was offered for term 3.
Humanities
- introduction of intermediate poetry courses
- expansion of writing for children courses
- expansion of current affairs courses.
Deaf education
- introduced a lipreading course for BSL users
- provided students on the access strand of the D/deaf degree with a route to continue their sign language studies at level 3
- installed a large button phone with inbuilt loop in the 4th floor student lounge
- loop system serviced
- set up a variety of student forums to suit different user groups, eg. BSL users, students with Acquired Deafness, DDS students
- re-designed Indivdual Learning Plans to enable students to make a more accurate judgement of how they have progressed
- moved courses to more suitable accommodation.
Enrolment procedures
- large print enrolment form available on demand
- disability leaflets made available at enrolment counter
- senior/concessionary fee payers now able to enrol online
- new permanent ticketing system planned for enrolments
- students only able to enrol one other person at peak enrolment.
Web
Students are now able to:
- enrol online if they are senior and concessionary fee payers
- read reviews from other students
- suggest ideas for courses on Facebook
- see last minute availability
- browse weekend courses
- find out more about City Lit’s departments.
Feedback on courses/services
- online rate and review for courses
- evaluation forms not submitted directly to tutor to make it easier to give honest evaluation
- awareness posters about the 9 ways to give feedback to City Lit.
Recycling and energy saving
- We now recycle 40% of our waste.
- Dyson Airblade hand driers have replaced the old style hand driers and towel machines. The Dyson Airblades use 80% less energy than normal hand driers and the HEPA filter removes 99.9% of bacteria from the air.
- Sensor activated lighting has been installed in toilets and central corridors to reduce energy consumption and save on CO2 emissions.
- CO2 emissions will be further reduced by a virtualisation project which will reduce the number of servers being used.
- Following student feedback, we are now recyling paper across the college.
Equipment
- Music Technology – one Apple Mac per student
- Office 2007 installed in all classrooms, tutorial rooms and SLC
- New blankets, pillows, uniforms and face rings purchased for students taking massage courses.
