You said, we did
We receive lots of feedback from students throughout the year, via Tell us what you think forms, learnerfeedback@citylit.ac.uk, course evaluations, and ad hoc focus groups. You may be interested to hear about actions we’ve taken as a result of your feedback. Here’s a summary of some of the changes we’ve made in the last year and for 2009/10.
Course offer
Visual Arts
- Introduced Advanced level course in Flash animation software.
- Set up a group for dressmaking and fashion accessories students to discuss their work and share ideas.
- Included ‘course levels' descriptions in the course guide and on the website to provide a clearer idea of what we mean by ‘beginners’, ‘intermediate’ and ‘advanced’ levels to help students find the most appropriate course for them.
Health and Movement
- Extra Latin moves mixed levels class for summer school.
- Extra Pilates class scheduled for the summer term.
Music
- Introduced new Ukulele courses.
- New course for singing teachers.
- Introduced new music appreciation course ‘Inside the BBC Symphony Orchestra’.
- Music Technology - advanced production techniques course added.
- Extra Introduction to Max/MSP course.
Computing
- Additional advanced Excel, Sage level 2 and Sage Payroll courses.
Languages
- Scheduled additional courses for students to progress onto the next level. Some courses were made up of 2 modules and an extra module was offered for term 3.
- New language courses were added for 09-10 where possible in response to high demand.
Humanities
- Additional courses for 09-10 in response to student demand.
Deaf education
- Introduced a lipreading course for BSL users.
- In 09/10 we will run the BSL level 3 certificate course after requests from students for an alternative to the NVQ course.
- Provided students on the access strand of the D/deaf degree with a route to continue their sign language studies at level 3.
- In 09/10 we will run a one year course for CSWs after a number of requests from potential students who do not want to commit to a degree.
- Installed a large button phone with inbuilt loop in the 4th floor student lounge.
- Loop system serviced.
- Set up a variety of student forums to suit different user groups, eg. BSL users, students with Acquired Deafness, DDS students.
- Re-designed Indivdual Learning Plans to enable students to make a more accurate judgement of how they have progressed.
- For 09/10 we have moved English for Work from Monday to a Friday after feedback from students that this woud be more convenient for day release.
- Moved courses to more suitable accommodation.
Enrolment procedures
- Skills for Life have changed their enrolment process and introduced an appointment system following student feedback.
Web site
Students are now able to:
- See last minute availability.
- Browse weekend courses.
- Read reviews from other students.
- Find out more about City Lit’s departments.
- View the site at larger font sizes.
Recycling and energy saving
- We now recycle 40% of our waste.
- Dyson Airblade hand driers have replaced the old style hand driers and towel machines. The Dyson Airblades use 80% less energy than normal hand driers and the HEPA filter removes 99.9% of bacteria from the air.
- Sensor activated lighting has been installed in toilets and central corridors to reduce energy consumption and save on CO2 emissions.
- CO2 emissions will be further reduced by a virtualisation project which will reduce the number of servers being used.
- Due to space constraints within the building, recycling of plastic and aluminium cannot be implemented at present.
Equipment
- Music Technology – one Apple Mac per student from September 2009.
- Office 2007 installed in all classrooms, tutorial rooms and SLC.
- New blankets, pillows, uniforms and face rings purchased for students taking massage courses.
