What is the course about?
An understanding of diversity is essential in the modern workplace. This course examines the importance of race, sexuality and culture in the delivery of services and exploring the issues that might arise when helping people of a different cultural identity to yourself. Through enhancing your relationships with others, you will learn to drive improvements in customer care, and make the workplace more welcoming to people from all communities.
What level is the course?
Aimed at people whose work involves helping other people e.g. counselling, social work, advice work and health service professions.
What will the course cover? (contents, themes, projects)
Exploration of discrimination, stigmatised identities, legisislative changes and the significance of diversity in the workplace.
Learning, exploration and reflection on identity, sexuality, race, gender and difference. Understanding and developing ‘cultural competence’, enhancing coping strategies and improving service delivery.

How will I be taught?
We will create a supportive environment in which learning will be facilitated by a combination of learning methods, ie. mini lectures; pair work; group work and experiential exercises. The workshop is highly participatory with students being encouraged to draw upon existing skills, abilities and experiences as a starting point for new learning.
