Top 10 tips for presenting yourself successfully
Need to brush up on your presentation skills? Our Presentation skills tutor, Jon Harris, shares his top 10 tips below for delivering successful presentations to help you present more confidently.
- “If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.”
PRACTISE all your communications, especially at moments you know will be tricky.
- Look people in the eye.
- Don’t fidget while speaking.
- Don’t use the word “But”. When you feel yourself about to say it, swap it for “Yes, and-”
- Try to speak more in pictures – use anecdotes, descriptions and verbal pictures.
- “Begin at the end. You can go back to the beginning later, if you’ve got time.” Start with the most important thing.
- Try not to say “I think” or “In my view”. See what a difference it makes if you use “I feel” or “I believe” instead.
- Before a formal presentation, stop, and take three, deep, slow breaths.
- In the words of the song – “Don’t go changing, trying to please me” – you CAN communicate well, as long as you present yourself honestly. There’s no need to pretend to be someone else!
- And most important of all, if playing an office game of hide-and-seek, when it’s your turn to hide – don’t sneeze.
