Over a year ago my life was without direction, but this year I am at university working hard and achieving good marks, all of which I can credit to the Access course. My time on this course was the most thought-provoking, interesting, tiring, nurturing and rewarding year of my life.

Be prepared to work hard, because you will only get out of this course what you put in. Make time to do the reading, question your knowledge and ask for help if you don't understand or are struggling. All that is required of you is to try and you will reap the benefits.

I started this course scared and unsure of both myself and my ability to study but I left with more self-confidence that I thought I could possess. I accredit much of this to the tutors who not only nurtured my burgeoning academic ability, but also helped me when I had personal struggles which threatened to affect my studies.

Be warned, you will be challenged and will sometimes find yourself having to work outside of your comfort zone. This is not just in relation to speaking up in class, working in groups or giving a presentation. Sometimes the reading or your interpretation of it will not be to your liking, but you will soon learn that it’s okay not to like something, nor to agree with current thinking. Do not be afraid to voice these opinions, as a mature student you have a life experience that offers to you unique insights – embrace them!

If you make the decision to continue your academic journey, then you will quickly discover that the skills you gained on this course set you apart from the (A-level) herd. From presentation and essay writing skills, to note taking and group work this course is an excellent preparation for university, and as I said before as a mature student your insights will often be different to your peers – do not be afraid to say something completely against the common thinking, I have found that tutors love when students create discussion.

Be brave and take a chance and you will change your life. I promise.
