The course is for you if you want to improve your mathematical skills for work, further study or personal development and need or would like to gain the GCSE qualification. It is a modular course and follows the AQA syllabus. The qualification is gained by taking an exam in each of the 3 modules spread throughout the year.
- an introduction to the language of maths, and a chance to look at some of the more everyday
applications of the subjects e.g. percentages
- statistics: an examination of how and why they are used
- a study of shapes and their various properties
- an introduction to the language of algebra.
- work with numbers with increased confidence
- use maths as a tool to solve problems
- apply maths successfully in everyday situations
- gain a maths GCSE qualification.
Maths GCSE is a level 2 qualification and the course is run at Foundation level offering grades C, D, E, F and G. Although there are no formal entry requirements, you will need to show that you have reasonable numeracy skills. This should include being able to do the following:
-Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers
-Recognise basic fractions and calculate fractions of a quantity
-Calculate simple percentages
-Add and subtract decimal numbers
-Order decimal number written to 2 decimal places
-Given large numbers in words write them in figures
-Understand and use negative numbers in a real life situation.
-Round numbers e.g. to the nearest hundred.
Classes will consist of skills input from the course tutor, discussion of specific topics, an opportunity to share ideas with others and problem solving exercises. The teaching will be activity based and there will be regular homework assignments to practise the skills learnt in class. You should be prepared to spend 4-6 hours a week on study at home.
Additional support for Maths is available in the study skills area of the Learning Centre on Mondays 2.30 - 4.30pm and Wednesdays 6.00 - 8.00pm. Dyslexia support is also available through the Learning Centre.
Accreditation (exam) cost is included in the course fee.
You will need a supply of A4 paper, pens, folders for assignments and any other appropriate stationery. You will need to buy a textbook and an appropriate calculator - the tutor will give you details of these in the first class. You will also need some basic Maths equipment - e.g. a ruler, a protractor, compasses.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

The course can be a self-contained educational experience. Maths GCSE is also a useful basic qualification which may be required by an employer. It could give you the confidence to apply for a higher level course in further education, such as an Access to Higher Education programme or an A Level. For anyone wanting to do a B.Ed. degree or a PGCE, Maths GCSE is one of the entry requirements.
