Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is designed for people who are currently working or volunteering in health and social care settings in the role of health care assistant or support worker. The classroom-based sessions are designed to extend your knowledge of legislation, policy and practice to help you progress in your career. Units are matched to your work experience. You must be providing competent support and/or care to your clients. You will be observed in your workplace to assess if you are working at the nationally agreed standards.

What topics will we cover?

The course contains 4 mandatory units:
• Communicating with and completing records for individuals in a health and social care setting;
• Understanding H heath and safety;
• Supporting the care protection and well bbeing of individuals in a health and social care setting;
• Developing o your own knowledge and practice in a health and social care setting.


You can then choose two optional units that are relevant to your work, e.g.

• Contribute ing to the identification of the risk of danger to individuals and others.
• Support ining individuals in their daily living.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Provide evidence, through your portfolio, which contains observations of your practice, that you are a competent health and social care worker.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The NVQ is a Level 2 qualification. You will be asked to take a literacy and numeracy assessment before enrolment.
You will need to:
- have good speaking and listening skills e.g. be able to provide active support for your client to communicate in difficult situations;
- be able to write clearly and complete records e.g. report and record information about an incident accurately;
- be able to make basic mathematical calculations such as providing active support to a client with planning their budget.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A mixture of tutor input, group discussion, pair work, DVD, video and games. Your assessor will visit you regularly at your workplace to assess/observe your work in practice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No further costs.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your progress will also be regularly assessed and monitored work place assessor taking into account class work and homework where appropriate. The assessor will record your progress and provide formal, regular feedback throughout the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
