Do you want to pursue a career in support work? You will develop the knowledge and skills you need to support vulnerable adults, combining theory and practice. As well as teaching days you will do a placement in a support work setting. Applications are encouraged from learners who have used support services or have experienced homelessness and are ready to progress to employment. A limited number of places may be available for learners who have no experience of accessing support services.

The Certificate in Supporting the Development Needs of Vulnerable People is a wide ranging qualification that will enable you to develop essential skills and knowledge to support vulnerable clients. It is relevant to people who wish to work in a number of settings such as homelessness, housing, support, meaningful occupation, resettlement and outreach.
You will attend college for 1 day each week to develop your knowledge and skills. You will also undertake an appropriate work placement to develop your practical competence.
How a knowledge of learning theories can support work with homeless and vulnerable people
How to plan effective support that is holistic and fully includes the client in the process
How to communicate effectively with clients, within your team and with other agencies
How to ensure that your working practice supports your health and safety and that of your clients and colleagues
Safeguarding of homeless and vulnerable people
How coaching skills and solution focussed communication can support your work with clients
How to identify and deliver learning opportunities for clients in your organisation.
Identify the values and principles that support the work in the sector
Plan support holistically to meet the needs of individuals
Relate to and support individuals in an empowering way
Communicate effectively and use solution focussed c appraches and coaching techniques
Demonstrate safe working practices for yourself and others
Identify your strengths and weaknesses and plan your professional development
Reflect on your work with clients and evaluate your skills and knowledge
Identify opportunities for learning activities in a work setting then plan and implement a short project for clients.
This is a vocational course. You will work towards the City & Guilds Level 2 Certifcate in Supporting the Development Needs of Vulnerable People.
You should be able to read and summarise information from different sources and write two or three paragraphs confidently. You should be able to follow verbal or written instructions and communicate clearly in writing. You will be expected to take part in group discussions, make significant contributions and help to move discussions forward. You should be able to plan, draft and organise your own work.
The classroom sessions are tutor led and combine groupwork, discussion, case studies, self-directed study, presentations, role-play, quizzes, DVD resources and research activities. You will be required to work on assignments in your own time.
Your assessor will support you with assessment of your classroom work and workplace experience and a work placement supervisor will support you with the development of your professional practice. You will have individual and group tutorials.
Assessment for the award is continuous. Written evidence, observation of practical competence, questioning, work products and witness testimony are compiled in a portfolio.
All course materials and a folder for your work will be provided. You should bring a black pen.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your assessor taking into account the work you complete in the classroom, homework assignments and work produced throughout your placement. Your placement supervisor will also give feedback on your professional practice.
Your progress will be recorded in assessment records and in your portfolio. You will also be required to assess your own progress at each tutorial.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be asked to give your views on the course at each tutorial with your assessor.

Once you have completed this course you could can progress to other health and social care related qualifications such as the Level 3 Diploma or a specialist qualification in substance misuse, mental health, housing etc.
