Applications are encouraged from learners who have used support services or have experienced homelessness and are ready to progress to paid employment. A limited number of places may be available for learners who have no experience of accessing support services.

What is the course about?

The Certificate in Supporting the Development Needs of Vulnerable People is a wide ranging qualification that will enable you to develop essential skills and knowledge of best practice in supporting vulnerable clients. It is relevant to people who wish to work in a number of sectors such as homelessness, housing, support, meaningful occupation, resettlement or outreach.

You will attend college for 1 day each week to develop your knowledge and skills. You will also undertake an appropriate work placement to develop your practical competence.

What topics will we cover?

How a knowledge of learning theories can support work with homeless and vulnerable people
How to plan effective support that is holistic and fully includes the client in the process
How to communicate effectively with clients, within your team and with other agencies
How to ensure that your working practice supports your health and safety and that of your clients and colleagues
Safeguarding of homeless and vulnerable people
How coaching skills and solution focussed communication can support your work with clients
How to identify and deliver learning opportunities for clients in your organisation.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Identify the values and principles that support the work in the sector
• Plan support holistically to meet the needs of individuals
• Relate to and support individuals in an empowering way
• Communicate effectively and use solution focussed communication and coaching techniques
• Demonstrate safe working practices for yourself and others
• Identify the strengths and weaknesses of your own skills and knowledge and be able to plan self-development
• Evaluate your work, putting into practice your new and improved skills and knowledge
• Treat people with respect and dignity
• Identify opportunities for learning activities in a work setting then plan and implement a short project for clients
•Implement a short learning project for clients in your work setting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a Level 2 accredited course that will provide you with a comprehensive foundation in support work knowledge and professional practice. At the start of the course you should be able to read and summarise information from different sources and write two or three paragraphs confidently. You should be able to follow verbal or written instructions and communicate clearly in writing. You will be expected to take part in group discussions, make significant contributions and help to move discussions forward.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

• The classroom sessions are tutor led and combine groupwork, discussion, case studies, self-directed study, presentations, role-play and research activities
• Classroom sessions for 1 day each week
• A designated assessor will support you with assessment of your classroom work and workplace experience
• A work placement supervisor will support you with the development of your professional practice
• Individual and group tutorials

Assessment for the award is continuous. Written evidence, observation of practical competence, questioning, work products and witness testimony are compiled in a portfolio.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your tutor and assessor taking into account class work and work produced throughout your placement. Your placement supervisor will also give regular feedback on your professional practice.

Your progress will be recorded in assessment records and in your portfolio. Your tutor will provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course and your assessor will provide formal feedback during tutorials and other assessment activities.

You will also be required to assess your own progress at each tutorial.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will be asked to give your views on the course at each tutorial with your assessor.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Once you have completed this course you could can progress to other health and social care related qualifications such as NVQ level 3 or a specialist qualification in substance misuse, mental health, housing etc.
