Course outline

What is the course about?

Increasing your understanding of dementia and applying good practice to the home or work place. The course is aimed at care workers, carers, relatives and interesetd individuals who want to be better informed.

What topics will we cover?

Increase your awareness of the different types of dementia and associated symptoms and behaviours.
Focussing on good practice and innovative ways to engage with people with dementia.
Exploring current medical research and how this might benefit people with dementia in the future.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify the different types of dementia.
Describe the various signs and symptoms of dementia.
Engage effectively with people with dementia.
Identify examples of best practice in the UK.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is non-accredited. You should be able to follow verbal or written instructions. You will be expected to take part in group discussions, make significant contributions and help to move discussions forward. You will have to demonstrate that you are able to use the techniques in a classroom environment.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be expected to participate in group discussion, small groupwork and role play. You will be provided with a list of recommended texts for further reading that will allow you to continue your learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials are supplied for this course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
