Course outline

What is the course about?

You will develop your working practice in line with current vocational standards. To be eligible you should be working or volunteering in an adult social care setting. The teaching days will expand your knowledge and your skills will be assessed in the workplace.

What topics will we cover?

The Diploma comprises nine taught mandatory units:
Communication in adult social care: barriers to communication and adapting your style to suit individual preferences.
Personal development: devise a plan to set goals for future learning and some reflective writing.
Equality and inclusion: legislation and challenging discrimination.
Duty of Care: understand what this term means.
The Role of the health and social care worker: understanding working in partnership
Person centred approaches: understand the values of this approach- consent; active participation and well being.
Health & safety: understand your own responsibilities and workplace procedures; risk assessment; moving and handling and infection control.
Handle information securely in adult social care settings: recording; sharing and storing information in accordance with the law.
Principles of safeguarding and protection: guidance related to abuse
There are further supplementary units to make up your quota of credits which you will select with the help of your assessor to match your role in the workplace.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Provide evidence, through observations of your practice and written assignments, that you are a competent health and social care worker.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a vocational qualification. You will work towards the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care. You must be currently employed in a paid or voluntary capacity in a social care, health or support work setting . You will be screened to ensure your role gives you a sufficient range of experience to achieve the award..

You should be able to read and summarise information from different sources and write two or three paragraphs confidently. You should be able to follow verbal or written instructions and communicate clearly in writing. You will be expected to take part in group discussions, make significant contributions and help to move discussions forward. You should be able to plan, draft and organise your own work.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will attend classroom sessions for one day per week. Teaching will include a mixture of tutor input, group discussion, pair work, DVD, video and games. Your assessor will observe your performance in the workplace and set work as appropriate.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You should bring a folder for your work and a black pen.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your progress will also be regularly assessed and monitored by your assessor taking into account class work and homework where appropriate. Your assessor will record your progress and provide formal, regular feedback throughout the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
