Course outline

What is the course about?

An introduction to working in childcare. Develop a basic knowledge and understanding of the needs of young children and how to support children's development in a range of settings.

What topics will we cover?

You will undertake 5 units:
Encouraging children to eat healthily
Create a safe environment for young children
Working in a team
Contribute to equality of opportunity in support of young children's development
Provide a range of appropriate play activities for young children.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- plan and prepare activities to encourage children to eat healthily
- respond to potentially hazardous or emergency situations
- work cooperatively with other team members
- list procedures, activities and resources which support equality of opportunity and inclusion
- adapt activities to enable the participation of individual children.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course. You will work towards the NCFE Level 1 Award in Working with Children

You should already be able to follow verbal and written instructions, express ideas clearly in writing, through writing lists and short pieces of text, and pick out essential information from a variety of texts (including websites and handouts). You should be prepared to discuss ideas in small groups.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a group using discussion, presentation, individual tutorial, role-play, quizzes and DVD resources.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials are supplied for the course. You should bring a folder for your hand outs and a black pen.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your portfolio will be formally assessed by your tutor, taking into account classwork and homework where appropriate.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 278 of the 13/14 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
