Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is for anyone who would like to progress to a level 2 or 3 qualification in childcare but who need to improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing in English.

What topics will we cover?

You will explore the main theories in childcare, find out about the range of employment and opportunities in childcare and study grammar, punctuation and essay writing skills.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify your strengths and future goals

Research opportunities for work and learning

Undertake a level 2 national literacy test

Be able to apply for a place on a level 2 or 3 childcare course.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a level 2 course
You should already be able to:
Read straightforward texts fluently and identify the main points and ideas in different texts
use format and structure for different purposes and identify the main points and ideas in a piece of writing
Prepare for and contribute to formal discussion of ideas and opinions
Extract information form lists, tables, diagrams and simple charts.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a group using discussion, presentation, individual tutorial, computer search, role-play, quizzes and DVD resources. There may be homework involving practice of skills learnt and research.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other costs. You will need a black pen and an A4 loose leaf folder and lined hole punched A4 paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can apply for a level 2 or level 3 course in Childcare. You can continue to improve your numeracy skills by enrolling on a numeracy course.
