Course outline

What is the course about?

Through simple, step-by-step instructions this course offers you the chance to get to know and understand computers.

What topics will we cover?

Basic theory of how computers work.
Word processing.
Spreadsheets.
Introduction to the Internet (Emailing, surfing and searching).
File management.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Understand basic computer technology.
Understand the basic Microsoft toolbar for Word, Excel, Internet Explorer and Outlook/Outlook Express.
Search the Internet using a search engine.
Feel more confident using a computer and enrolling on further computing courses.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for beginners with little experience of using computers. You should be able to follow spoken instructions, read written instructions and information, and discuss work with your tutor.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer.
Presentations will be made using computers, interactive whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes.
Step by step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
