Course outline

What is the course about?

Through simple, step-by-step instructions, this course is a chance to become more confident with your use of the internet and e-mail.

What topics will we cover?

Understanding web jargon: www, surfing, hypertext, spam etc.
E-mail
Setting up web based e-mail account.
Sending and receiving e-mail (the basics).
Forwarding and replying.
Downloading and saving attachments.
Attaching files to your messages (images and other documents).
Compiling an address book (contacts).
Deleting emails.

Web browsing
Accessing web sites and web pages and the use of web addresses and Hyper Text Links.

How to search the web
Using search engines to find specific information.
Downloading information from a web site.
Adding favourites.
Printing web pages.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Understand basic Internet terminology.
Accurately describe the composition of e-mail addresses.
Set up a web based e-mail account.
Create and send an e-mail.
Reply to an e-mail.
Forward an e-mail.
Send an e-mail with an attachment.
Download and save attachment.
Print an e-mail.
Delete unwanted e-mails.
Save contact(s) into an address book.
Navigate the web via hyperlinks and toolbar navigation buttons (forward, backward, home).
Accurately describe the composition of web addresses.
Use web addresses to access web sites.
Become familiar with the basic functions of web search tools.
Complete and submit a web based form.
Add a web page to favourites.
Print web pages.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for complete beginners to using the Internet and email, but you should have some prior experience of using a computer or possibly have completed a beginners computing course. You should be able to follow spoken instructions, read written instructions and information, and discuss work with your tutor.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer.
Presentations will be made using computers, whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes.
Step by step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
