Course outline

What is the course about?

ECDL Essentials is a Level 1 ITQ (National Vocational Qualification for IT) Award accredited by the British Computer Society. It is an excellent first qualification in IT, with units covering the fundamentals of using IT and managing files, the internet and email and how they can be used safely and productively in the office environment.

What topics will we cover?

ECDL Essential comprises three modules:

IT user fundamentals
Using email and the internet
Security for IT users

Candidates who complete this qualification will obtain an ECDL Essentials certificate which will also be a level 1 award.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

IT User Fundamentals:

Use the Windows operating system
Manage and organise files and folders
Maintain systems
Manage print options
Apply good practice regarding health and safety
Understand security issues such as using passwords, backing up, virus protection
Understand the laws that surround computer use such as copyright and data protection

Using the Internet and Email:

Use the internet
Use a web browser application
Use the web to search for information and save or print a web page
Understand electronic communication
Send and receive emails
Organise emails and add contact details to an address book

IT Security for Users:

Know what "spam" is
Understand how to maintain information and technological security
Know where to find relevant guidelines and procedures
Know ways to keep data secure

On successfully completing the required modules you will be awarded:
BCS Level 1 ITQ Award and ECDL Essentials Certificate.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You must have used a computer before and are expected to have a basic working knowledge of Microsoft applications. This is NOT an absolute beginners course.

You should be able to follow spoken and written instructions, read handouts/exercises and take part in group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer.
Presentations will be made using computers, interactive whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes.
Step by step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The non-refundable Examination Fee is included in the fee.
You may wish to purchase a course book. The tutor will give suggestions about these.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
