Course outline

What is the course about?

You will develop the intermediate/advanced skills you need to create more exciting publications. You will gain an insight into the more advanced features of the InDesign page layout program, using Apple Macs.

What topics will we cover?

- Planning and designing complex publications.
- Preparing and cleaning up placed (imported) text
- More advanced text formatting features e.g., tracking and kerning, hanging indents, and paragraph rules.
- Using master pages (parent and child) and copy flow.
- Setting up and importing styles (including nested styles).
- Working with colour including, editing and importing colours and the principles of trapping and colour separation.
- Working with placed images.
- Looking at InDesign preferences.
- Quick keystrokes and hints.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Construct complex advertisements.
- Clean up text bought in from Word
- Layout a multi-column, multi-page document.
- Work with text to create, apply and import styles.
- Create and apply Sequential (next) styles to selected text
- Set up and apply parent and child master pages.
- Apply good working practices (file identification, naming and saving conventions).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to be able to perform basic print production tasks using InDesign. If you have not done the InDesign Stage 1 course please check the course outline to see that you are familiar with what was covered. You should also be able to follow spoken instructions, read written instructions and information, and discuss work with your tutor.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer. Presentations will be made using computers, whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes. Step by step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
