Course outline

What is the course about?

This course follows on from InDesign stage 2 and builds on your existing InDesign skills. You will learn new advanced skills and explore topics in greater depth.

What topics will we cover?

- Looking at reusable items from: managing libraries and snippets to
adding words to the Dictionary and setting hyphenation preferences.
- Planning longer documents
- Setting up an index and creating styles for a table of contents
- Laying out a double page spread
- Creating basic tables and looking at styles for Tables and Table Cells
- Working with and managing complex styles including: text (Character, Paragraph and Nested styles) and Object styles.
- Adding interactivity to an InDesign document and applying correct export settings for the pdf.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Create and apply object styles
- Nest Character styles in a Paragraph style
- Identify steps required to set up a table of contents and an index
- Lay out a double-page spread
- Create and style tables
- Add interactivity to an InDesign document and export to pdf.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need to have completed City Lit’s InDesign stage 1 and stage 2 courses, both run by the Computing department or have had equivalent experience. If you have not done the InDesign Stage 2 course please check the course outline to see that you are familiar with what was covered. You should also be able to follow spoken instructions, read written instructions and information, and discuss work with your tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
