How to start researching your family history and how to use the internet to build on your initial findings.
How to trace your ancestors using the net.
What free information is available for you to access.
What information is worth paying for and which sites may be worth subscribing to.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Start, or extend, your family history.
Develop a knowledge of basic genealogical sources and research techniques.
Use a variety of web-sites to research family history on the internet.
Understand the sort of information on family history likely to be available online.
Appreciate the excitement and challenges of using the internet to research family history.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be familiar with using a computer keyboard and mouse. Some familiarity with searching the net would be useful, but is not essential.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be shown demonstrations and presentations and encouraged to use computers to search for information. Discussion and an exchange of ideas will be encouraged.
You will be encouraged to make use of the internet outside classes. Though this is not compulsory, it will give you additional information and useful experience.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional costs during classes, but you may want to buy certificates, pay for copies of documents at libraries and subscribe to a specialised genealogy web-site. You should bring writing materials and be prepared to bring research items.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
