Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn the basics of making overhead, slide or on-screen presentations using the software Powerpoint.

What topics will we cover?

Presentation design considerations.
Introduction to the main features of PowerPoint and its working environment.
How to create a presentation in Normal View and Outline View.
Enhancing presentations using font size and type, colour, style or slide background, line spacing, bullets and numbering and shadow effect.
Working in different views such as normal view, slide sorter and slide show.
Adding, deleting, copying and re-ordering slides.
Applying design templates.
Applying visual effects such as animation and transition effects.
Inserting and editing images, charts and tables.
Adding presenter's notes.
Printing slides, handouts, notes and outline.
Modifying slide master.
Working with graphics: using SmartArt Graphic and creating simple graphic objects using drawing tools.
Creating action buttons and Hyperlinks.
Inserting sound and media files.
Setting up a slide show using rehearsed timings.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify presentation design considerations.
Create a slide show using text and graphics.
Use formatting features to enhance the appearance of a slideshow.
Apply animation and slide transitions.
Apply preset slide design.
Use and modify slide master.
Use text and graphics as action buttons.
Print presentations in different formats.
Produce and edit various objects in a presentation such as charts, tables and images.
Time your presentation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Although this is a beginner's course to PowerPoint, you should be able to use the keyboard and mouse and have word processing experience. You should be able to follow spoken instructions, read written instructions and information, and discuss work with your tutor.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer.
Presentations will be made using computers, interactive whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes.
Step by step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
