Course outline

What is the course about?

A network is a group of connected computers that allow people to share information and equipment. The course will combine both theory and practical elements. You will learn various forms of network installation and configuration and apply that knowledge to constructing a Windows based network. If you are interested in networking computers at home or work, this is the course for you.

What topics will we cover?

Networking concepts.
Networking in Windows.
Types of networking (peer-to-peer, client-server).
File sharing.
User accounts and access control.
Cabling and bandwidth.
Hardware (network adapters, hubs, bridges, switches, routers).
Networking topologies.
Networking protocols (routable and non-routable, NetBEUI, TCP/IP).
TCP/IP (IP addressing, subnet masks, gateways and routing).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Understand basic networking concepts and technologies.
Be familiar with various network hardware devices and infrastructure.
Install and configure a Windows based network.
Be able to share files and hardware across a network.
Understand security issues in a networked environment.
Understand the role of TCP/IP and routing connection to the Internet.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will be expected to have knowledge of the basic concepts of computers and how they work, and be familiar with Windows or another graphical operating system (e.g. Mac).

You should also be able to follow spoken and written instructions and add, subtract, multiply and divide.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer.
Presentations will be made using computers, interactive whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes.
Step by step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
