The course will be a combination of theory and practical work. You will be introduced to what virtualisation is and the different ways it is implemented. Practical work will focus on using VMWare to set up and configure virtual computers.
Virtualisation concepts and terminology.
Types of virtualisation in IT.
Hardware virtualisation.
Virtualisation software including VMWare.
Virtual machine components – memory, processor, drives.
Virtual hard disks.
Networking options.
Installing an operating system on to a virtual computer.
Management of virtual machines.
Hardware independence and portability.
Downloading and “playing” virtual computers.
Understand virtualisation concepts.
Be aware of various forms of virtualisation.
Be familiar with hardware virtualisation technologies.
Use VMWare to create virtual machines.
Manage a number of virtual machines on a single computer.
Port a virtual computer to a different host.
You will be expected to have knowledge of the basic concepts of computers and how they work, and be familiar with Windows or another graphical operating system (e.g. Mac).
You should also be able to follow spoken and written instructions and add, subtract, multiply and divide.
Each student has their own computer.
Presentations will be made using computers, interactive whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes.
Step by step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
