Course outline

What is the course about?

The primary focus of this course is on achieving successful web page layout. Using Dreamweaver, this course is a practical introduction to the use of styles and style sheets to create web pages that are compliant to current HTML standards. You will learn how to use styles to control the look and positioning of elements on a web page. The course addresses practical issues of website design. It does not deal with online forms, scripting or aesthetic design concepts.

What topics will we cover?

- Setting up an external style sheet.
- Styling elements, such as text, on a page.
- Using styles for control of page layout through the use of tags.
- Understanding the main categories of styles (selectors) and when to use them.
- Understanding how the Cascade works in CSS.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Create an external style sheet and link it to a web page.
- Establish a style in a style sheet.
- Apply a style to an element on a page.
- Use the three main class selectors: Class Selector; Tag Selector; ID Selector.
- Change text through the use of styles.
- Create spacing around and between elements with styles.
- Apply the Cascade principle in the use of styles.
- Control the layout of a web page through the use of tags.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a stage 2 course and is suitable for students who have completed the Dreamweaver: stage 1 course at City Lit or equivalent. Please contact the Computing department if you are unsure of your level and we will be happy to advise you. It is essential that students have prior experience using Dreamweaver and a basic understanding of HTML. You should also have competent computer file management skills and be able to use an Apple Mac.

You should have a good knowledge of English, be able to follow spoken and written instructions and discuss work with your tutor.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer.
Presentations will be made using computers, interactive whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes.
Step by step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A means of taking notes will be useful.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
