Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is for those using Dreamweaver and wish to implement image galleries within a web page. This includes arranging thumbnail images with CSS and creating a ‘lightbox’ effect i.e. when a thumbnail is clicked on, the larger version expands and appears over the page. The technical components for galleries such as these are often freely available on the web. The course looks at the practical issues to implement these components, such as linking to multiple JavaScript and CSS documents and making appropriate edits in the HTML.

What topics will we cover?

- Preparing images with Photoshop
- Organizing site files structure
- Page layout with CSS
- Linking to CSS and JavaScript documents
- Editing HTML code.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Implement an effective image gallery for display in a web site
- Prepare images for display with Photoshop
- Organize site files structure
- Arrange thumbnail layout with CSS
- Create links to CSS and JavaScript documents
- Edit HTML code.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an advanced level course. Prior experience of layout with CSS and using Dreamweaver is essential. A basic understanding of HTML code is useful. This course is especially suitable for those students who have completed Dreamweaver Stage 2 at City Lit. Experience with Photoshop is useful though not essential. Prior knowledge of using JavaScript is not required (the course does not involve editing of JavaScript). Learning is conducted on Apple Mac computers. If you are in doubt about your skill level then contact the City Lit Computing department.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

All work will be conducted within class although as it is a short course students are encouraged to practice in their own time in order to make effective use of the learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials will be provided although students are encouraged to bring in their own images (in digital format) to use in class.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
