Student stories

Since developing a severe hearing loss,
Mary Stephens taught herself to lip-read, and cannot imagine how she would manage without this vital skill. The difference it has made to her daily life encouraged her to train to become a lip-reading teacher.
“I only became aware of lipreading classes when I applied for this training, and I feel that I missed out not only on being professionally taught to lip-read, but also in meeting others in a similar situation to myself. Having lived as a hearing person and now as a hearing-impaired person, I know just how hard it can be to communicate with others and simply do ‘normal’ things that others take for granted.
Mary completed the Lipreading Teachers’ Training course, and also gained a City & Guilds certificate in further education teaching.
“It has changed my life in a way that I didn’t think possible. I now run five local classes a week teaching lipreading to adults with acquired hearing loss, as well as deaf awareness training. The confidence this course and this qualification have given me is immeasurable, and I see the rewards of my hard work every day in my smiling students.”
