Lipreading teacher training

Do you have a clear speaking voice and an interest in working with adults with hearing loss? Perhaps you have a hearing loss yourself.
Would you like to train as a lipreading teacher? The work is rewarding, challenging and creative, and in many areas there is a shortage of trained lipreading teachers.

Lipreading classes support and encourage deaf and hard of hearing people who use spoken English as their preferred method of communication, giving them the skills and knowledge for self-reliance and active participation in the community. Classes are friendly, supportive and full of lively and stimulating challenges. Many people say that lipreading classes have turned their lives around.

Training to teach

We offer a part-time lipreading teacher training course which runs over 18 months.

The course covers:
• theory and practice of teaching lipreading
• hearing loss, speech and language
• aids and agencies for hard of hearing people
• theory and practice of adult education

There are two modules to the course - Preparing to teach and Teaching lipreading. At the end of the course you will gain a qualification in teaching lipreading, and a City & Guilds qualification in teaching adults. Most teachers are employed in Adult and Community Learning but others work privately or are funded by other local agencies.

"The course took a lot of hard work, but now I've finished and I'm about to start teaching six classes in West Suffolk and Cambridge, I know it was worth the effort." Anne

An extremely enjoyable and very informative course, with all tutors knowledgeable and with great teaching techniques in order to better aid us in class. Necessarily intense at times, the course covered all subjects in detail and has given me the confidence and grounding to pursue my career in teaching lipreading.” Hayley

The next training course is scheduled to start in April 2012 and finish in the summer of 2013. Interviews will shortly be taking place.
