Our coursesCity Lit’s Faculty of Deaf Education offers one of the most comprehensive programmes in Europe for D/deaf learners and those interested working in a deaf related field.
With over 60 years experience the provision is widely viewed as a Centre of Excellence nationally and internationally and the department is frequently contacted to offer advice, support and training on a wide variety of issues related to deafness, deaf learners and working with deaf people.
Learners come from all over the country and beyond - so unique is the programme and so highly regarded are the expertise and skills of the wonderful staff team, which includes (D/deaf, hard of hearing and hearing): - teachers of the deaf, lip reading teachers, sign language teachers, teacher trainers, interpreters, communicators, note takers (manual and electronic) and hearing therapists.
The department provide courses for deaf adults in English, Maths, Computing and British Sign Language plus some other specialist courses. Lipreading courses for adults with an acquired deafness. British Sign Language courses for all from Introduction to Level 4.
The offer includes specialist training for lip reading teachers, sign language tutors and people who want to work as tutors with deaf learners.
There is also a programme of specialist training for note takers, communication support workers and interpreters including a BA Hons Degree in Deaf Studies and Educational Support validated by Middlesex University.
The Deaf and Disability Support Services provides a comprehensive support package of language service professionals and technical support for D/deaf and disabled learners in further, higher and adult education institutions throughout the London area.
