This is a course for students who passed level 1 in BSL but who are not quite ready to do level 2 in BS. This course is not accredited, however, you will get a attendance certificate at the end of the course.
You will learn BSL communication skills at pre-level 2 relating to the following topics:
- Everyday conversation
- Meeting and describing people
- Family
- Hobbies and interests
- Daily routines
- Eating and drinking
- Health and illness
- Activates at work
- Getting around and places in town.
- Shopping and spending
- Numbers
- Clothes and colour.
Demonstrate signing skills in BSL structure at pre-Level 2 by:
- Show a wide range of vocabulary
- Use correct and clear hand shapes
- Use suitable facial expressions with signs
- Conduct a conversation with a deaf person
- Show turn-taking and asking for clarification
- Tell a short story.
You will need to have basic Literacy as you will be asked to write some self-evaluations and read topics and instruction.

DVDs and books are in the library at City Lit.
There are two “Starting to Sign” booklets for beginners which are also provided by City Lit.
‘BSL for Dummies’ books can be purchased at a special price, subject to availability.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. One-to-one feedback is given during the course.
