What is the course about?

This qualification is designed to enable you to communicate with Deaf people at Level 1 standard in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics using simple, everyday language.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL
- Take part in simple conversations in BSL
- Give and understand simple directions in BSL
- Give and understand simple descriptions in BSL.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to have basic literacy as you will be asked to write some self-evaluations and read topics and instructions for examination.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Demonstration
- Pair/group work

- Receptive skills from DVD

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

What feedback will I get?

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately. Students who are new to BSL should cover the introductory unit first as units 102 and 103 build on this knowledge. Unit BSL 101 is internally assessed. Units 102 and 103 are externally assessed by a Signature assessor.
To achieve the full certificate in BSL, students are required to pass all units. Successful candidates can apply for a place on a Level 2 in BSL course.
