Fast-track BSL level 3 & 6 NVQ

This is an individual 1 to 1 based course, suitable for you if you are already fluent in BSL at level 3 or level 6. It is an ideal route if you work with Deaf people, as you must be able to collect your own evidence externally for your portfolio. You will be asked to attend a series of 5 sessions, which last for 2 hours each. The duration of the course is flexible, as you will negotiate your dates and times of sessions with the assessor.

Course outline

What is the course about?

During this course you will develop the following:
- Understanding of NVQ procedures and requirements, learn all about the portfolio and what evidence is required.
- Ability to build a portfolio of written and video evidence, description of the NVQ terminology and how to meet
the criteria outlined in the qualification standards.

- Assessment guide
- Individual assessment plan
- Evidence collection
- Live observations
- Self evaluation.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Demonstrate appropriate level of understanding, usage and skill in BSL to complete the portfolio for level 3 NVQ
certificate in BSL or level 6 NVQ certificate in BSL.
- Demonstrate BSL skills to meet Signature's assessment criteria
- Complete portfolio of evidences.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

- This is designed for candidates who have been recommended to start collecting evidence for Signature's level 3
NVQ certificate in BSL. An assessment and interview ill be required.
- You will be required to have basic literacy as you will be asked to write your candidate profile and self-evaluations
- You will also be expected to be able to read and understand the unit instructions, specifications and assessment
criteria
- An interview will be required for assessment of your signing and suitability for the course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Explanation by tutor
- Introduction to portfolio and assessment specification
- 2 hours induction meeting
- 2 hours for live observation ad receptive skill evidence
- 3 times 2 hours tutorials
A considerable amount of additional home study will be required. You will be expected to collect evidence externally, in your own time.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

- Portfolio folder and paperwork will be provided.
- DVD (+RW) discs for collecting evidence are available at a small cost of £1
- Signature registration and assessment are included in the course fees.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Yes. What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. - You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the tutorial

- Three 1:1 tutorials are also included, to go through each piece of evidence in the candidate's portfolios.
The assessor will record your progress and provide feedback on each clip during these tutorials.
- Your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your assessor and internal verifier
- For each piece of evidence you will write a self-assessment of your own progress and achievement against the
assessment criteria.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

- Level 3 NVQ certificate: if you successfully complete your portfolio, you can go on to "Working towards Level 6
NVQ certificate in BSL"
- Level 6 NVQ certificate: if you successfully complete your portfolio, you can go on to an interpreter training
course.
