» Find another course in Deaf education» Search all coursesThis qualification is designed to enable learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. It is also an opportunity for trainee BSL tutors to demonstrate their teaching skills. A fully qualified BSL tutor will supervise the sessions.
You will learn BSL communication skills at beginner level relating to the following topic areas:
- Meeting people
- Using numbers
- Weather
- Transport
- Directions
- People, animals and objects in the home
- Interests and activities
- Refreshments
- Getting around.
- Recognise and use a limited range of simple words an sentences in BSL
- Take part in simple conversations in BSL
- Give and understand simple directions in BSL
- Give and understand simple descriptions in BSL.
You will need to have basic literacy as you will be asked to write some self-evaluations.

- DVDs and books are available in the library at City Lit
- 'BSL for Dummies' books can be purchased at a special price, subject to availability.

After completing the Introduction to BSL, you can enrol on a level 1 in BSL course.
