Course outline

What is the course about?

This qualification is designed to enable learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. It is also an opportunity for trainee BSL tutors to demonstrate their teaching skills. A fully qualified BSL tutor will supervise the sessions.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn BSL communication skills at beginner level relating to the following topic areas:
- Meeting people
- Using numbers
- Weather
- Transport
- Directions
- People, animals and objects in the home
- Interests and activities
- Refreshments
- Getting around.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Recognise and use a limited range of simple words an sentences in BSL
- Take part in simple conversations in BSL
- Give and understand simple directions in BSL
- Give and understand simple descriptions in BSL.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to have basic literacy as you will be asked to write some self-evaluations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Demonstration
- Pair/group work
- Question and answers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

- DVDs and books are available in the library at City Lit
- 'BSL for Dummies' books can be purchased at a special price, subject to availability.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. When I've finished, what course can I do next?

After completing the Introduction to BSL, you can enrol on a level 1 in BSL course.
