Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will enable you to become D/deaf aware, you will gain a basic knowledge of deafness and communication skills which can be used with D/deaf, hard of hearing and D/deafblind people. You will learn a few basic signs and fingerspelling which will assist basic communication with British Sign Language users. The course leads towards a full introductory course in BSL.

What topics will we cover?

- Different groups of D/deaf people, appropriate terminology and the communication methods used by these groups
- Different types of deafness and how these affect communication
- Different technical aids used by D/deaf people and how to use language service professionals such as BSL/English interpreters and specialist notetakers.
- Practical communication skills to use with a variety of D/deaf and hard of hearing people.
- The advantages and limitations of hearing aids and lipreading
- The fingerspelling alphabet and some basic signs to communicate with a Deaf BSL user.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Demonstrate knowledge of clear communication principles
- Maintain communication and repair communication 'breakdowns' using appropriate tactics with a D/deaf person
- Know how to use fingerspelling and a range of basic signs to communicate with a Deaf BSL user
- Describe a range of relevant technical equipment and language service professionals.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Basic introduction. No previous skills or experience are required.

You will be taught through:
- Whole class teaching
- Pair/group work
- Practical exercises
- Demonstrations
- Discussions
- Presenting information
- Question and answer
- Role-play.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no extra costs, but BSL for Dummies books are available for purchase at a discount price.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
