These courses are ideal if you have passed level 3 in BSL and you want to develop your skills up to level 6, in preparation for a level 6 NVQ in BSL course. Develop and establish fluency in your use of BSL in a variety of situations and registers, in both productive and receptive skills.

Course outline

What is the course about?

To establish and develop your:

- Fluency in the use of British Sign Language at level 6 in a variety of situations, topics and registers in productive and receptive skills
- Advanced knowledge of the structure and grammar of BSL
- Practical experience in a productive working environment
- Understanding and preparing for your level 6 NVQ certificate
- Appreciation of the Deaf community and its culture and relevant issues

Introduce you to how you will be expected to collect evidence for your future Level 6 NVQ certificate in BSL.

What topics will we cover?

- Text analysis of BSL
- Phonology and Morphology of BSL
- Social variation
- Advanced BSL grammatical
- History of BSL and fingerspelling
- Idiomatic use of non-manual features to develop the meaning of BSL
- Informal/formal setting
- Presentation practice
- Technical vocabulary - Legal, Medical and Genetic
- Advanced use of fingerspelling
- Development of complex use of role shift
- DVD analysis on various uses of BSL features.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand complex social interaction
- Understand signed communication in a wide range of complex work situations
- Understand a complex range of vocabulary and technical language
- Understand a full range of grammatical forms
- Maintain social and professional relationships using BSL
- Use complex sign language to communicate fluently over extended periods on all topics within his/her field of work in a range of situations
- Use a complex range of vocabulary and technical language
- Use a full range of grammatical forms.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

- This course is designed for those who have completed their Level 3 NVQ in BSL and have been recommended to "Working towards Level 6" in BSL, pre-level 6
- You will required to have basic literacy skills as you will be asked to write some self-evaluations, and notes as part of preparation for presentations as well as read instructions for exercises.
- An interview will be required to assess your signing.

A considerable amount of additional home study will be required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need at least one blank DVD (+RW).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Students will have 1-1 tutorials and be given feedback on their progress.

- You can apply for Level 6 in BSL NVQ Certificate - if you are at the standard necessary for Level 6 in BSL.
