Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a course for people with acquired deafness. You will learn BSL at level 1 standard in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics using simple, everyday language.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn BSL level 1 in communication skills relating to the following topic areas:
- Meeting people
- Using numbers
- Weather
- Transport
- Directions
- People, animals and objects in the home
- Interests and activities
- Refreshments
- Getting around.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL
- Take part in simple conversations in BSL
- Give and understand simple directions in BSL
- Give and understand simple descriptions in BSL.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to have basic literacy as you will need to read basic words during class. You will write down briefly what you have learned. Your tutor will help if this is difficult.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Demonstration
- Pair/group work
- Receptive skills from DVDs
- Role play
- Discussion
- Narrative short story.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

- Examination fees are included in the course fees
- DVDs and books are in the library at City Lit
- There are two Starting to Sign booklets for beginners which are also provided by City Lit.
- 'BSL for Dummies' books can be purchased at a special price, subject to availability.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Come to the special drop-in at City Lit on a Wednesday afternoon 2-3 during term time for an interview. Please ask reception for room number.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. One-to-one feedback is given during the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately. Students who are new to BSL should take unit 101 first as it is introductory. Units 102 and 103 build on this knowledge. Unit BSL 101 is internally assessed. Units 102 and 103 are externally assessed by a Signature assessor.
