This qualification is designed for D/deaf students to improve their BSL skills. You will take Signature level 2 in BSL.
You will learn receptive, productive and conversational skills at level 2 in the following topic areas:
- Everyday conversation
- Daily social/work/school routines
- Eating and drinking
- Shopping and spending
- Travel and holidays
- Story-telling
- Health and illness
- News
- BSL grammatical structure and features.
Demonstrate signing skills in BSL structure at level 2 by being able to:
- Show a wide range of vocabulary
- Use correct and clear hand shapes
- Use suitable facial expressions with signs
- Conduct a conversation with a deaf person
- Show turn-taking and asking for clarification
- Tell a short story.
You will need to have basic literacy as you will need to read basic words during class. You will write down briefly what you have learned. Your tutor will help is this is difficult.

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Come to the special drop-in at City Lit on a Wednesday afternoon 2-3 during term time for an interview. Please ask reception for room number.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. one-to-one Feedback is given during the course.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which can be achieved separately. Students should take unit 201 BSL receptive skills, units 202 BSL productive skills and unit 203 conversation skills. All units are externally assessed by a Signature assessor.
