Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a new course for Deaf adults. It aims to enable you to improve your lipreading and communication skills in everyday spoken English situations.

What topics will we cover?

We will discuss and practise communication in a variety of everyday situations. This includes lipreading, speech and ways of managing spoken English situations.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Use more effective ways to communicate in some spoken English situations.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a practical communication course. You do not need to have any qualifications to join the course, but you need to have some basic language skills.

Most class discussions and instructions will be in BSL. So you will need to be able to take part in BSL discussions. You will also need to understand and use basic words and sentences in spoken English.

You also need to be able to consider and discuss your own communication skills and learning needs.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Classroom work will include:
Discussions;
Role-plays;
Voice-work;
Lipreading.

Work outside of class will include real-life communication practice situations.

We will use video film to record practise and you will have the chance to review the films and discuss your progress.

The teaching team is a mix of hearing and Deaf specialist tutors.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a pen, a notepad and A4 folder.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
Please contact us to arrange an interview at deafedu@citylit.ac.uk. You can also come to one of our drop-in sessions on Wednesday afternoons in term time, to find out more information.

At the interview, we will check that you can follow the class instruction in BSL. We will also assess your spoken English and lipreading skills and find out what kind of situations you find most challenging. This will help us to make sure that the course is most useful to you.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be encouraged to assess your own progress, using short video films of your own communication practice.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course is new. We will decide during the year whether to provide more advanced courses.
