Course outline

What is the course about?

As a newcomer to computing you will learn the very basics, from how to switch on a computer and use a mouse, to exploring the internet for the latest weather updates and holiday bargains. You will follow the British Computer Society's Computer and Online Basics course.

What topics will we cover?

Computer basics.
Introduction to the desktop and Windows.
Introduction to file management.
Word processing basics.
The World Wide Web.
Email.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify parts of the computer system.
Operate the system by logging in and out with a password.
Describe the basic desktop features of Windows (icons, taskbar, start button, recycle bin).
Control Windows environment (open, close, scale a window and work within multiple windows).
Understand basic file management including saving to a USB memory stick, deleting files and recognising different file types.
Select appropriate keys (including caps lock, enter, spacebar, backspace, shift, arrow keys).
Create and save a short document.
Retrieve and edit the document using insert, delete and undo facilities.
Move text within a document using cut and paste.
Enhance the document by making some text bold, underlined and centred.
View, re-save and print the document.
Understand basic internet terminology.
Browse the web using Internet Explorer program and navigation buttons.
Become familiar with the basic functions of web search tools.
Set up a web based e-mail account.
Complete and submit a web based form.
Create, send, reply to, forward and print e-mails.

Upon successful completion you will be awarded the BCS Certificate in Entry Level Award in Computer and Online Basics (ITQ) (Entry 3).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for complete beginners - no previous experience, or knowledge is necessary.
You should be able to follow spoken instructions, read written instructions and information, and discuss work with your tutor.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer.
Presentations will be made using computers, interactive whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes.
Step-by-step instructions, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other costs: exam fees are embedded in the fees. You do not need to bring anything.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) certificate.
