Course outline

What is the course about?

Adobe InDesign is a desktop publishing computer application used to create posters, flyers, brochures, magazines and books. In this stage 1 course you will learn how to plan and design a publication, construct simple advertisements and lay out a multi-column page.
This course is taught on Apple Mac.

What topics will we cover?

- Introduction to the Mac computer and its operating system.
- Introduction to InDesign for print production.
- Introduction to key Desk Top Publishing (DTP) concepts and terms.
- How to plan and design a publication .
- Setting up a single-page document.
- Basic text formatting.
- Placing text set in a word processing program, and placing image and graphics.
- Introduction to Open Type and some of its features.
- Setting up a multi-page document.
- Basic introduction to master pages, working with style sheets and working with colour.
- Exporting a document for print.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Construct simple advertisements.
- Lay out a multi-column page.
- Identify and place correct image file formats for print.
- Apply text formatting and style sheets.
- Have an understanding of when to export work to pdf and when to package for printers.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for beginners to InDesign. You should be familiar with the basics of computing, although this does not need to be on Apple Mac. You should be able to work confidently with the keyboard and mouse in either a word processing, or image editing program. You should also be able to follow spoken instructions, read written instructions and information, and discuss work with your tutor.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student has their own computer.
Presentations will be made using computers, whiteboard, overhead screen and printed notes. Step-by-step instruction, with demonstrations where appropriate, will help you grasp the concepts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
