This course is for deaf students who need more understanding of driving theory and who feel their deafness is a barrier to passing the theory test. This course is open to students who wish to use an interpreter for the test as well as those who do not.
What you will need to know when you take the theory test.
Please note: The actual test is not included in this course. You will have to arrange this yourself.
Show you are aware of dangers
Identify bad drivers
Identify safety things about your vehicle (e.g. car, van, etc.)
Identify safety margins
Identify how accidents happen
Show that you know road and traffic signs
Show that you know the rules of the road and motorway rules
Use an interpreter, if you need one in the test.
You should have some practical experience of driving. You will be able to take part in discussions using BSL, read and follow instructions and signs, and be able to respond to written questions. You will therefore need a good standard of signed communication and reading skills.
Group, pair and individual work; discussion; use of pictures; photographs and CD Rom; practice tests.
Please bring pencils/pen and paper, and a file or folder to keep hand outs safe.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. One-to-one feedback is given during the course.
