Course outline

What is the course about?

This class is for adults who hold the RSA CLAIT certificate or have similar experience and wish to improve their computer skills and take the European Computer Driving Licence examination.

What topics will we cover?

Complete a variety of simulated work tasks using personal computers
Provide access to and tuition in a range of application packages
Develop awareness of the range of equipment/technology currently in use
Increase understanding of computer and office technology terminology
Increase students confidence when approaching new equipment/software.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Attempt elements from ECDL Level 2 including:

Word Processing
Spreadsheet
PowerPoint
Improving Productivity

Elements covered will depend on the progress made by the individual student.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

An accredited course divided into 5 units including Unit E (theory of computing), Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Database and Power Point. This course enables you to broaden your skills and work towards a European Computer Driving Licence level 2. An accredited course divided into 4 units including Word Processing, Spreadsheet, PowerPoint, Improving Productivity.

To enrol on the course you need to have good IT skills, and have passed ECDL Units at level 1. You will need to have entry level 3 skills in English or a certificate at English entry level 3. You wil also need to have entry level 2 skills in Numeracy or at a certificate at Numeracy entry level 3.

You will already be able to:

Read and understand simple English instructions
Add numbers up to 1000
Subtract 2 digit numbers
Understand and draw different charts such as bar charts

You will need to attend an Advice, Information and Assessment Session before enrolling.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be some whole class teaching. Most work is practical with demonstrations of new software and techniques. Classes are held in British Sign Language and spoken and written English.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to buy your own disk. We also sell a helpful book.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be continuous assessment of learning and regular revision built into each session.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
