Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is about building your confidence in using spreadsheets. It class is for adult deaf students who have a basic knowledge of IT and want to obtain a credit in spreadsheets.

What topics will we cover?

Loading and exiting from a spreadsheet software package.
Loading and saving a spreadsheet file.
Printing a spreadsheet.
Entering data in a spreadsheet.
Formating data using justify, font, font size and colour.
Moving, copying and replicating data.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Achieve an OCN Entry Level 3 certificate in spreadsheets.
Load and exit from a spreadsheet software package.
Load and save a spreadsheet file.
Print a spreadsheet.
Enter data in a spreadsheet.
Format data using justify, font, font size and colour.
Move, copy and replicate data.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a basic level spreadsheets course (entering text, numbers, formulae, formatting, modifying and linking sheets and creating charts), but you need to have a basic knowledge of computers to enrol. It leads to an entry level 3 certificate in spreadsheets.

You should already be able to understand simple instructions in English and need to have an Entry Level 1 Literacy certificate and Entry Level 1 Numeracy certificate, or skills at this level.

You will need to attend an Advice, Information and Assessment Session before enrolling.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Most work is practical. Teaching is carried out in small groups.
Classes are taught in sign, spoken and written English.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring a USB memory stick and a file with plastic wallets.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
