This class is for students who want to gain a GCSE qualification in mathematics, with the aim of increasing your mathematical skills and understanding of course concepts.
- an introduction to the language of maths and the more everyday applications of the subjects e.g. percentages
- statistics: an examination of how and why they are used
- shapes and their various properties
- the language of algebra
- mathematical investigations: an opportunity to undertake two pieces of mathematical research.
- work with numbers with increased confidence
- use maths as a tool to solve problems
- apply maths successfully in everyday situations
- gain a Maths GCSE qualification.
You will have done work on numbers, measurement, shape and space, and handling data.
You will already have passed either Adult Numeracy Level 1 or have equivalent skills at the beginning of the course. You will already be able to:
- Recognise and use large numbers up to millions
- Use halves, quarters, tenths and fractions of whole numbers.
- Represent information in list, tables, charts and graphs
- Describe the properties of common shapes.
The course is taught at GCSE Foundation Level EDEXCEL for Adult Numeracy using sign language. The syllabus used will be Excel 1385.
Those at a higher level may have the opportunity to attempt Higher Level GCSE Maths. The level of exam entry will be decided after the course has begun.
You will need to attend an Advice, Information and Assessment Session before enrolling.
Whole group work with students working individually on practice worksheets and problems. Some pair/group work will be involved in the investigation tasks. There will be regular homework. Classes will be held in British Sign Language with the use of clear spoken/written English.
Please bring paper, pens, pencils and rulers.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
