Course outline

What is the course about?

This course gives you the opportunity to improve your computing skills and IT knowledge, learn new software and gain a recognised qualification awarded by OCR. The ITQ Level 1 qualification is based on OCR's New CLAIT (Computer Literacy and Information Technology) certificate.

What topics will we cover?

Three units from:

Word processing software.
Spreadsheets software.
Presentation software.
Desktop publishing software.
Improving Productivity using IT @ level 1

Topics covered will depend on the progress you make and any prior knowledge.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Use word processing software to produce documents, letters and posters.
Use the spreadsheet to perform calculations and create charts.
Use presentation software to create a slide presentation.
Use desktop publisher to create a newspaper or magazine page.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need to be able to use a mouse and keyboard and be familiar with basic computing software such as word processing. You should also have entry level 2 skills, or a certificate in Numeracy, or English at entry level 2.

You should already be able to:
Understand simple English instructions.
Add numbers up to 100.
Subtract two-digit numbers.
Multiply single digit numbers.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Most work is practical and individualised, with demonstrations of new software and techniques. Teaching of new material is carried out individually, or in small groups, depending on learners' needs. Classes are taught in sign language, and written Engish

You will need to practise outside the classroom.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The non-refundable examination fee is included in the course fees.

You will need a memory stick which can be purchased at the college, or provided via the Learner Support fund (if applicable).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Continue with OCR ITQ Level 1, or progress to ECDL Level 2.
