Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is for students who have a basic knowledge of numeracy and confidence in using numbers and the ability to apply the knowledge they have learnt.

What topics will we cover?

Reading, counting and ordering numbers up to 1000
Adding, subtracting, multiplying,dividing
Reading, writing and understanding decimals
Using a calculator
Money
Measuring length, weight, temperature
Time
Shapes - 2D and 3D
Using graphs to get information.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Read, count and order numbers up to 1000
Perform simple addition, subtractions, multiplications and divisions
Use a calculator to check your answers
Read, write and understand decimal and vulgar fractions
Recognise coins and notes and be able to add up and subtract
Measure length in metres and centimetres
Measure weight in kgs and grams
Measure capacity in litres and millilitres
Read and write time
Be able to work out differences in time
Be able to identify and draw 2D and 3D shapes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is taught at level 2 of the National Curriculum for Adult Numeracy using sign language.

You will already have passed either Adult Numeracy Level 1, or have equivalent skills at the beginning of the course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught individually and in small groups. Handouts and worksheets will be provided. The tutor will give you feedback on your progress. There will be a chance for you to complete a record of your work, verified by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring paper, pens, pencils and rulers.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
