Learn how to recognise some sounds that are visible on the lips and how to use other tactics to support lipreading.
Learn which sounds can be seen, which look alike and why.
Develop an awareness of other skills used to lipread: memory, concentration, observation, awareness of rhythm, situation, context, facial expression and body language.
Recognise visible speech sounds and their value to lipreading
Recognise which consonants look alike on the lips
Recognise the limitations of lipreading and the alternative tactic to use
Understand the factors that make lipreading easier.
You will have an acquired hearing loss and use spoken English to communicate with others.
In class there will be group work, pair work, practical work, observation, demonstration and discussion.
Please bring pen, notebook and A4 folder.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. This will be done by keeping a record of work covered and skills practice and discussion with the tutor.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
