Explore ways that you can improve the support that you provide to D/deaf learners by working more effectively alongside mainstream tutors and other support workers. After discussing strategies for ongoing deaf awareness within classes and providing specific deaf awareness training sessions, the course will teach co-working skills for settings that require two CSWs/interpreters.
The course will be split into two main workshops. The first will focus on working alongside tutors who have no experience of D/deaf learners and the second will look at strategies for working with other support workers, such as notetakers, CSWs, interpreters and language support tutors.
Communicate the needs of your D/deaf learner clearly and concisely as required and begin to consider ways you could provide more formal deaf awareness training. Identify ways that you can work with notetakers, CSWs, interpreters and language support tutors to provide good quality support. Co-work effectively with a fellow CSW/interpreter in continuous and complex interpreting situations.
You should have general knowledge of deaf awareness and the issues faced by D/deaf learners in mainstream education. Although you do not need to have a full CSW qualification, some experience of working in education support settings would be an advantage. Sessions will be conducted in English and you will be expected to participate in small group and class discussions. You should be able to use basic written resources and texts in order to discuss and plan ideas for deaf awareness training sessions. You may also find it useful to take notes during the day.
Teaching methods used may include: class discussion, DVDs, small groupwork, demonstrations and scenario based learning.
There are no other costs.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
