Course outline

What is the course about?

This course trains you to teach the course 'Notetaking for Students with Disabilities in Higher Education'. You will receive a handbook outlining the teaching units with marking sheets and ideas for teaching.

What topics will we cover?

How to teach notetaking: useful teaching methods, how to assess students, how to teach technical skills and personal skills, introducing information about disabled students and the context of working with disabled students.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- plan and run an OCN course
- use marking and assessment to develop trainees skills
- promote good working practice in an educational setting
- extend good practice in developing services for disabled students
- promote personal skills and self evaluation skills of notetaking trainees
- review your course provision

You will receive a City Lit certificate and can apply for permission for your college to run the note taking course.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is level 4.
Effective English skills are at the core of notetaking; as a tutor delivering the training programme, you will need English skills at level 2 or above. These include:
- Accurate spelling and grammar
- A wide vocabulary
- Employing strategies for active listening
- Structuring, organising and presenting texts in a variety of forms on paper and on screen

You should have notetaking experience, or be coordinating an academic support service.
You will need a teaching qualification, or equivalent experience, and you should be aware of disability issues in education.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Discussion, explanation, exercises, group and pair work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a note book and a selection of pens.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. A telephone interview may be required at tutors' discretion.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will receive formal and informal feedback during the course and there will be opportunities for tutorial meetings.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Or submit a review about the course on-line.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Any course which develops your skills in working with D/deaf people, for example: Open College Network certificate in Electronic or Manual Notetaking for Disabled People; Lipspeaking training; British Sign Language training or our new Level 3 Certificate in Learning Support (Communication Support Work).
