Do you have native fluency in BSL and are you interested in teaching adults? This course is a City and Guilds qualification in basic teaching skills. The course is taught in BSL, and much of the coursework can be submitted in either BSL or English. We can provide you with opportunities for observation and teaching practice.

Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is an introduction to teaching skills for Deaf people wanting to teach adults. The course is delivered in British Sign Language. It leads to a nationally recognised City and Guilds qualification. The course is aimed at teachers of BSL, but it is also possible to use the qualification to teach a different subject. To apply you should usually have a qualification at level 3 in your subject. If you wish to teach British Sign Language, you will be asked to demonstrate you are fluent and have knowledge about BSL at interview.

What topics will we cover?

Adults as learners;
Barriers to learning as an adult;
The roles, responsibilities and boundaries of a teacher;
Planning lessons and courses;
Choosing teaching methods and techniques;
Preparing resources and learning materials;
Inclusion, equality and diversity;
Ways of assessing learning;
Ways of evaluating your teaching, and that of other people.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Verbal and/or written feedback will be given on teaching practise, assignments and course portfolios; and in tutorials and a mid-course appraisal. You progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your mentor and the course team. Your achievements will be recorded in a "Checklist of Achieved Criteria".

There will also be opportunities to evaluate your course at the end of every lecture block.


Explain ways adults learn, and what barriers they face;
Describe the role, responsibilities and boundaries of a teacher;
Plan a lesson and short course in your subject;
Select different teaching methods and resources;
Recognise and support the different learning needs of students;
Support your learners' literacy, numeracy and ICT skills;
Check the progress of learning;
Evaluate your own and others' teaching.

To achieve the City &Guilds certificate you will need to:
Demonstrate 80% attendance;
Deliver a successful micro-teaching session;
Deliver a portfolio of theory and practise assignments.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is level 3.

English level -
You will need to be able to read basic information such as instructions and brief reports.
You will need to be able to write simple handouts and lesson plans.

BSL Level –
This course is taught in BSL, so you must have a high level of BSL fluency.
If you want to teach BSL, you will also need to know about how BSL language works.

Coursework –
The coursework will be done in a combination of BSL and English. The amount of BSL coursework will be decided after your interview.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group sessions will involve:
- Tutor input;
- Tasks - individual and in small groups, pair work, brainstorm, role-play;
- Large and small group work;
- Simulated teaching;
- Tutorials.

In addition, you will be required to:
- Do some research on your own as guided by your tutor;
- Complete theory and practical assignments;
- Write reflective journals;
- Visit experienced tutors.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to buy a folder to organise paperwork form the course, as well as a lever arch file with a plastic cover for your portfolio.
You will need a supply of DVD's to record microteaching and presentations.

Your Tutor will recommend reading at the start of the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Email us on deafedu@citylit.ac.uk. You can also some to one of our specialist drop-in sessions on Wednesday afternoons 2-3pm (term time only)
The interview will included assessments in both British Sign Language and written English.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You are encouraged to review your own progress during the course. You will also work with other class members to review each others progress. Your final portfolio will be marked by your tutor and an internal and external moderator.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You can also give your views through feedback in the classes, and on-line.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Achievement of this course can be a useful first step into paid employment. It is the minimum qualification you need in order to start teaching. You can continue from here to the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector or PGCE/Cert.Ed. Your course tutor will discuss your progression and give your appropriate advice.
