Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is one of eight units which together lead to a Signature-endorsed nationally recognised professional qualification. Please see section 12, below, for the remaining seven units. The full course will run over a two-year period.

This qualification is for you if you already work as a specialist learning support practitioner with D/deaf learners or if you wish to work in this area. Work contexts include various adult education settings as well as work-based training settings within voluntary, community, private and public organisations.

The aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge of issues surrounding access to English for D/deaf and D/deafblind people. It will look at issues faced by deaf people when accessing spoken and written English and give you the skills to be able to describe and analyse English. This will include how D/deaf and D/deafblind children develop spoken and written language and the language features that are likely to cause an issue for D/deaf and D/deafblind adults.

This course forms part of the Level 3 Certificate in Learning Support (Communication Support Workers) and also forms part of the Signature Level 3 Award in Modifying Texts for Deaf People. The Certificate in Learning Support consists of eight units that will be run over two years. It is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills that are essential for specialist learning support practitioners working with deaf learners and for anyone providing support for work based training. It is an excellent basis if you wish to pursue a career in these fields.

What topics will we cover?

You will be given the tools necessary for analysing and describing language generally, but particularly the main structures of English. This will prepare you for learning how deaf and deafblind children develop spoken and written language and the conditions that enable them to learn language most effectively. You will then explore how English, spoken or written, can be made more accessible and the key lip movements, sounds and elements of written English that may present difficulties for deaf and deafblind people.

At the end of the course there will be a one hour written assessment paper set and marked by Signature, with a pass mark of 50%. The paper will contain a number of questions relating your knowledge and understanding of the topics covered throughout the course. One question will include a short piece of written text, which you need to analyse in order to explain why it might be difficult for a deaf reader. Reasonable adjustments can be made for anyone wishing to complete the assessment in BSL.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify the key features that languages share.
- Describe and analyse key structures and grammatical features of spoken and written English
- Distinguish language variations in terms of register, style, regional variation and influence of other language/s.
- Explain how deaf and deafblind children develop spoken and written language as well as the conditions that enable them to learn most effectively.
- Identify features of spoken and written language that may pose difficulties for deaf and deafblind children and ways to help to make language more accessible to them.
- Evaluate ways of producing written language that makes it more accessible for deaf and deafblind people.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a level 3 course. You will be expected to have achieved a minimum Level 2 in BSL, although level 3 is desirable. You are also required to have Level 2 English and maths qualifications. BSL and English skills will be assessed at interview.
Throughout the course you will be required to read text books and research papers, understanding the key arguments and selecting the most relevant points to use in your own written work. Good literacy skills will also be required for the final written assessment.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching methods used will include groupwork, scenario based learning, peer and tutor observations, presentations, practical tasks, group discussions and case studies.

You will be expected to complete 20 hours of personal study in addition to the 20 hours of taught time.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no further costs but you will need to bring pen and paper to class, and a folder is recommended.
In order to achieve the Signature qualification and certificate, you must successfully complete all 8 units of the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Contact us on 020 7492 2725 or email deafedu@citylit.ac.uk to arrange your interview, which will include assessments in both British Sign Language and written English.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. In addition to the regular feedback you will get in class, from the tutor as well as from your peers, you will also receive individaul tutorial feedback. You will be required to undertake individual self reflection throughout the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. You will also have the opportunity to give your views during classes and tutorials.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
