Course outline

What is the course about?

This course introduces you to professional notetaking skills It also provides information about our nationally recognised Open College Network (OCN) qualification, both manual and electronic, which allows you to work professionally, supporting deaf and disabled students in education.

What topics will we cover?

This course explains why notetakers are needed and which groups of learners use the service. It describes some of the skills and strategies which notektakers employ.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Explain the notetaker's role
Implement strategies for successful notetaking.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

To gain the most from the course we recommend that you have at least Level 2 English skills. You should be able to write fluently and clearly in English, using accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation. You should also have good listening and comprehension skills and be able to read out texts and express yourself clearly.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures, role play, group and pair work, discussion, exercises and by giving and receiving feedback about the quality of your notes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring pens and A4 lined paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. Or submit a review about the course on-line.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Any course which develops your skills in working with D/deaf people, for example: Open College Network certificate in Electronic or Manual Notetaking for Disabled People; Lipspeaking training; British Sign Language training or our new Level 3 Certificate in Learning Support (Communication Support Work).
